These agreements require that your personal information, regardless of where it is held or processed, is safeguarded to the same high standard required by law. While no security measures can offer absolute assurance, taking proactive steps to prevent unauthorized access to your password, phone, and computer is essential. Simple practices such as signing out after using a shared computer, selecting a strong password known only to you, and keeping your login credentials confidential can significantly enhance your security. For more insights on best practices, please refer to our guide on Staying Safe Online.
  • How long do we keep the personal information we collect?
We retain your personal information only for the time required to fulfill the original purposes for which it was collected, or as permitted by applicable laws. After this period, we either anonymize or delete your personal information. Once this process is finalized, your email address is removed from our distribution lists. Furthermore, unless certain data must be retained for accounting or legal obligations (such as addressing potential chargebacks), access to and visibility of your account is no longer maintained.
  • Protect your personal information
Sharing any personal information that can lead to your identification, such as your full name, personal email, phone number, workplace, social media profiles, and more, carries the risk of potential misuse. It is essential to exercise caution in how you manage your information when participating in networking, contributing to message boards, or maintaining a blog. If you are active on online social networks or contribute to blogs, it's advisable to be prudent in your connections and the information you disclose. It's a good practice to prioritize connecting with individuals you trust and to avoid sharing any personal details about yourself that you wouldn't feel comfortable sharing with strangers. Being vigilant in managing your personal information is crucial for safeguarding your online presence.
  • Use unique passwords
Using the same password across multiple accounts, including your The Red Tent Collective account, social media profiles, and email services, significantly increases your exposure to security risks. This practice is analogous to using the same key for your home, car, and office – if someone gains access to one, the security of all is compromised. To enhance your security, follow these guidelines for creating and safeguarding your passwords: Do: Create a password with a minimum of eight characters, including letters, numbers, and special characters. Use separate passwords for your computer login and various online accounts. Exercise caution when responding to emails, phone calls, faxes, or letters requesting your password(s). Regularly update your password. Consider using a password manager that: Supports two-factor authentication. Prompts you to change old passwords. Identifies weak or reused passwords. Alerts you to compromised websites. Integrates seamlessly with your various devices, such as your phone, computer, tablet, and others. Don't: Use easily guessable options like your address, birth date, phone number, common words, or your pet's name as your password. Share your passwords with anyone, regardless of your relationship with them. Keep a written record of your passwords near your computer, where others might see. Store your passwords in your purse or wallet, increasing the risk of theft. Transmit your password or credit card details via email, as email is inherently insecure for such sensitive information.
  • Protect your device
When your computer, laptop, tablet, or phone is not actively in use, it's wise to secure your screen to prevent unauthorized access. To enhance security, set your device to automatically lock after periods of inactivity. To significantly reduce the risk of exposing sensitive or private data, consider these additional precautions: Use a PIN or passphrase as a protective layer for your device. Disable features that are not currently in use, such as GPS, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi connections. Exercise caution when connecting to unfamiliar, unsecured, or public Wi-Fi networks. Before disposing of a device, ensure that all stored information is completely erased. Be cautious when encountering unsolicited text messages or emails; avoid opening files, clicking links, or dialing numbers contained within them. Keep your software up to date, including both operating systems and applications. Prior to downloading apps, carefully review their privacy policies and user reviews to verify their legitimacy. Avoid relying on "Remember Me" functions on websites and mobile apps; manually enter your username and password when logging in. Protect personal or sensitive data and communications through encryption. Be aware of potential risks, stay vigilant regarding your devices (including cables, chargers, and peripherals), and remain situationally aware. Strengthen your defense against hackers by implementing two-factor authentication. By incorporating these practices into your routine, you enhance your digital security, safeguarding your devices and personal information from potential threats.
  • Avoid phishing attacks
Exercise caution when you come across requests for personal information: Be cautious about responding to questionable emails, instant messages, or pop-up windows that request personal details like passwords, bank account or credit card numbers, or your birth date. Even if the message appears to come from a trusted source, like your bank, avoid clicking on any links or providing a reply. Instead, it's safer to visit their website directly or use their app to access your account. Remember, Maggie's Custom Sweet Treats will never initiate communications asking you to send passwords or financial information via email. Stay vigilant for impersonators: If you receive an email from someone you know, but the content seems unusual, their account may have been compromised. It's wise to refrain from responding to such messages or clicking on any embedded links until you've verified the legitimacy of the email. Watch out for signs like: Urgent requests for funds. Claims of being stranded in foreign countries. Claims of a stolen phone preventing direct communication. Always verify suspicious URLs or links: Phishing attempts aim to trick you into revealing sensitive personal data, including passwords. These deceptive attempts can take various forms, requiring the development of skills to identify suspicious emails and websites. For instance, a hacker might create a seemingly legitimate login page that is actually fake. If you enter your password, the hacker gains access to your account or could even infect your device. To protect yourself from falling victim to phishing: Avoid clicking on dubious links. Verify the legitimacy of a website or app by checking the URL, ensuring it starts with "https" before sharing any information.
  • Use secure networks
Be cautious when using public or free Wi-Fi networks, including those that require a password for access. It's crucial to be aware that these networks may not have encryption, which could allow individuals nearby to monitor your online activities. This includes the ability to observe the websites you visit and the information you input on those sites. If you find yourself in a situation where public or free Wi-Fi is your only option, the Chrome browser provides a safeguard. It will display the security status of your connection to a website through an indicator in the address bar.
  • Report suspicious behaviour
